Employee Spotlight is a new Cohear blog series meant to share more about the amazing individuals on our team. Every month, we’ll share a quick Q&A with one of our team members so you can get to know us a little bit better.
Meet Jasmine Ayres. Jasmine has been with team Cohear since August acting as our Organizing Lead for the great city of Columbus.
Hey Jasmine! We’re so excited to have you on the Cohear team! How did you first hear about Cohear and what was your initial impression?
I heard about Cohear from a friend who had actually applied for the job. They found out I was looking, and thought that I would be a great fit. Needless to say I have the absolute “Best” friends.
You have an extensive background in community organizing. Can you tell us a little bit more about your work before Cohear and how it informs what you’re doing now?
I have spent the last five years organizing around criminal justice reform in Columbus, working with government teachers to educate students, registering voters, protesting police violence, and running for Columbus City Council. I also do a good deal of organizing with my Church’s Community Development corporation, feeding the community, building affordable housing, connecting people with jobs, and most recently hosting free drive-thru COVID 19 testing. I’ve found that I’m most fulfilled when I’m living a life of service.
What are you most excited for in your role as a Lead Organizer?
To teach people about, and connect folks to decision makers. People are experts on their own lives but are often unaware of who the decision makers are and how the decisions get made.
Now that you’ve been on the team for a little while, is there anything about our work that you find most surprising or enjoyable?
I work with the most amazing group of people. The honesty, care and concerns they have for each other and the community is unrivaled.
How long have you been in Columbus and what are some things you love most about the city?
