Employee Spotlight is a new Cohear blog series meant to share more about the amazing individuals on our team. Every month, we’ll share a quick Q&A with one of our team members so you can get to know us a little bit better.
Meet Daniel Opoku. Daniel is Cohear's new Graphic Design Intern. Daniel has some amazing ideas at how graphic design, UX, and social impact go hand in hand. But enough from us, lets talk to Daniel!
Hey Daniel! We’re so excited to have you on the Cohear team! How did you first hear about Cohear and what was your initial impression?
I first heard about Cohear on LinkedIn that the organization has an internship opportunity for a graphic designer. The name Cohear was fascinating to me as someone with a Communication Design background. I interpreted “Cohear” as a healthy dialogue in which all voices count. I then checked the organization’s website to learn more about how you make things happen here.
One thing that stood out in your interview was how you view the role of design in social impact projects. Would you tell us a little about this?
Well, from product to policy, everything is Design. However, if the people I am designing for are not involved somewhere in the design process, there is a high probability to manipulate, abuse or dogmatize. For equity to exist between Designers and Users, there should be a Cohear between both parties. This is where the discourse is, and I am constantly looking for ways to understand my Users as a User Experience Designer.
What are you most excited for in your role at Cohear?
As a Communication Designer, making information accessible to Policymakers and the everyday experts and seeing how the information contributes to social change is a self-rewarding task. I strive for clarity of content in my workflow to make data digestible. I am confident that my i’s and t’s are dotted and crossed respectively because of the instant helpful feedback I get from the team.
Is there anything about Cohear’s work that you find most surprising or enjoyable?
Yes, the collaborative environment. I enjoy how each other's progress feeds into the other like a food chain. And the passion each one of you brings to the table every morning. Everyone in the team is searching for equity.
How long have you been in Ohio and what are some things you love most about the city?
I live in Athens, Ohio and because it is a college town, the community is almost empty every summer. However, biking along the Hockings River has always been a refreshing experience.
